Start at village hall in centre of Canonbie. Turn right leaving hall, over River Esk. Turn left along old A7 Edinburgh road. Continue on tarmac past picnic area (approx 1.5km) and saw mill.

Over the Byreburn Bridge turn right up the “Fairy Loup” track. Continue past the waterfall and the remains of the Gilnockie railway viaduct. Turn right at end of track over Nell’s Brig. Follow tarmac up the hill past Byreburnside farm.

Over brow of hill turn first left up an unsurfaced track past the old Royal Observer Corps lookout and water storage tank. On a clear day good views of the Lake District hills and Bewcastle Fells can be seen from this highest point of the walk. Through next gate on right and over two fields to Rowanburnhead Farm and an unsurfaced track (Oil Drum Lane) which leads to the B6357.

Turn right on the road past play area and BBC Scotland Beechgrove Garden project (1997). Immediately on left is entrance to Rowanburn Glen ( a small detour of 400m). Turn left after Diamond Cottage down lane past log and coal yard. Follow the old Langholm branch line for 1km to Rowanburnfoot. Follow steep path down to tarmac road and turn right up Hugh’s Brae. On the left is the Liddel Viaduct (listed).

Follow tarmac to remains of Brighton Camp which housed Italian POWS and Australian woodmen post war. Turn left down avenue of beech trees, just after a bungalow named Idelwild, to bank of River Liddel which is border between England and Scotland at this point. Follow path downstream to meeting of the Liddel and Esk at the Willow Pool.

Follow River Esk path upstream to the fishermen’s car park. Follow the car track for 300m and turn left to river at head of the Lang Pool. Walk along the Glebe to the Dead Neuk Pool. Follow church wall back to tarmac and Canonbie. Return to village hall turning left over bridge.
